Food Safety Training Set for July 13

In anticipation of possible new food safety regulations for fruit and vegetable producers, a training is coming up this summer for producers to see what to expect in an on-farm Food Safety Audit. Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Ag Enhancement Program is offering additional cost-share (50% level) in the Producer Diversification Program for upgrade of produce packing facilities, food grade materials for a GAP plan, and restrooms/handwashing facilities for workers. To get the 50% cost-share producers must attend a food safety training (this audit meetings will count) or one of the winter food safety trainings already held.

July 13 – 1 PM - Maury County –UT’s Middle Tennessee Research Center at Spring Hill – 1000 Main Entrance Drive,  Spring Hill - Peaches – Call Richard Groce at (931)375- 5301.

These meetings are open to everyone. Cornell Food Safety Manuals will be available at these meetings as long as they last. Please call Richard Groce for more information.

We think it’s great news that several Tennessee Prisons are choosing to Go Green, and Live Green Tennessee recently visited Sergeant Doug Griffith of the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
Griffith explained a recycling program that turns leftover food from five prisons into rich, fertile mulch that’s then used on a 100-acre kitchen garden. The inmates working the farm save the prison system—and you, the taxpayer—money...
But more important is the responsibility, the fresh air, and the opportunity to learn practical, employable and life-long skills to help trustees adjust to life upon release.
